On Being Glue

Earlier this week I had the privilege of hearing Software Engineer, Tanya Reilly (@whereistanya) tell her cautionary tale on Being Glue. This was a such a great talk about learning and growing and finding your place, and choosing what not to do. If you missed it, you can watch it here, over your morning or afternoon coffee. I heartily recommend checking out her No Idea blog, which is chock full of good stuff. Everything from continuous integration, to productivity, to learning and growth, and all other tech acronyms that I’m yet to really get a good handle on.

“Don’t choose a role that you don’t want because you’re scared of doing the one you do want. Choose the role that makes you successful and happy and proud, and is teaching you the skills you want to have.”
— Tanya Reilly, Senior Software Engineer at Squarespace

Zendesk’s (@Zendesk) Software Art Thou? (#softwareartthou) talks are always great and I try to attend as many as possible. They are a great way of learning about roles outside of your won realm. I’ve found them to be a really great way of working out how companies are building products and services, what the plethora or tech roles actually involve, how the various teams work together, and what the most critical and useful skills are for getting sh*t done.
